THE CRAZY RAID AT JIMMY HASLAM'S "PILOT FLYING J" headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee is cause for concern if you're a Browns fan! The joint was swarmed by dozens of FBI agents and IRS people as well. Generally, when these people sweep in, it's not because someone forgot to pay a bill or something. Can you say Fair Finance? While you are always presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law, this IS a big deal! I know Mr Haslam denied anything serious was going on, but he did say that the investigation is criminal as opposed to civil in nature. Haslam also said the raid had to do with a "very insignificant number of customers and their application for rebates". OK, but does that require dozens of government officials swooping in on Pilot Flying J? I guess we'll find out. The Haslam family is well connected politically (Jimmy's brother is the governor of Tennessee). Don't know if that will help or hurt in this case, but again, I guess we'll find out. The FBI is saying NOTHING. If you're not familiar with the Fair Finance case I mentioned earlier, FF was a 75 year old Akron based company purchased by a couple of crooks from Indiana. They turned a very successful business into a ponzi scheme and stole over 200 million dollars from unsuspecting investors (myself included). The FBI came to Akron, raided the place, and 3 years later the 2 owners were sentenced to life in prison. Will this happen in the Haslam case? Don't know, but I guess we'll find out. I don't believe in curses, but it is spooky how screwball stuff always happens to Cleveland's sports teams. I'll bet you never saw this coming...did you?
THERE IS A GREAT STORY IN TODAY'S AKRON BEACON JOURNAL concerning a member of the Army National Guard in Akron who carried an American flag throughout west Akron, downtown and the University of Akron area yesterday. It was his way of showing national pride after the Boston terrorist attack. Read the story here www.ohio.com.
