IT'S LATE AUGUST AND FOR SPORTS FANS ONE OF the most exciting times of the year! Major League baseball is entering the stretch run and yes, despite what happened to the Indians earlier this month (swept by Detroit in a 4 game series) they still have a shot at making the playoffs. They are only three and one half games out of a wildcart slot, and five and one half games behind the Tigers. I must admit, I wish they were AHEAD of the Tigers at this point, but they are "in the hunt". Stranger things have happened! The Tribe has been a streaky team this year and they're due for another run of winning baseball. Meanwhile, footballs are flying on practice fields all over northeast Ohio. High school football is all set to go and college football starts for real next week. Locally, the Akron Zips open their season on the road at Central Florida in Orlando next Thursday evening (hear all the games this season on FoxSports 1350). Akron was flat out awful last year, but Coach Bowden is in his second year and has put his stamp on the team. Except for the game on September 14 (at the "Big House" in Ann Arbor against Michigan), the Zips should be in every game. Meanwhile the Kent State Golden Flashes also start their 2013 campaign next Thursday at Dix Stadium against Liberty. The Flashes will win, it's just a matter of by how many points. Again this year, KSU will be a power in the MAC and should play in another bowl game. Every game will air on 640 WHLO. Finally, The Ohio State Buckeyes are no longer being punished by the NCAA because of 'Tattoogate' and their games really mean something this year. Most experts believe OSU will be a top 5 team this year! Oh, how could I forget about the Browns! Cleveland is 2-0 in preseason and most fans are already getting in line for Super Bowl tickets. So put a few beers in the cooler and get ready for an exciting sports September. I should also add that you can win tickets to KSU games during my show from 9am until noon on 640 WHLO.
I'LL TALK TO YOU IN THE MORNING ON 640 WHLO. JIM
