SOME STORIES THAT I DIDN'T GET TO ON todays show....
Our loser of the day has to be Pamela Beck, although there IS a good argument to be made for Amie Peterson. You see Pam and Amie stopped at a Starbucks in St. Petersburg, (Florida, naturally) for a cup of coffee. In order to pay for her java, Pam set her bags down and wouldn't you just know it, the fully loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun she had in the bottom of her purse fired, hitting Amie very close to that very special place (north of her knees). The rest of the story is predictable...Pam forgot it was in her purse, it was a gift from her father and NO concealed carry permit. Prosecuters are taking a look at the case and Amie is probably REEEEAL mad at Pam.
WITH MOTHERS DAY IN THE REAR VIEW mirror, let me give you one more reason to appreciate mom. Insure.com figured that for all the work she does around the house (everything from cooking to handling finances) mom would earn $59,862 on the open market (Insure.com figures her hours would be much more than the standard 40 hours). Last year the figure was $60,182 and in 2011 it was $61,436. Why are her fictional wages trending down? That's easy, wages for domestic workers are down (just like most peoples wages). Hey mom, NO RAISE FOR YOU!!
IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT WE HAVE LOST OUR collective minds, this should end it. Doug Bartlett, a Chicago teacher with an outstanding 17 year career under his belt, was suspended without pay in 2011. Why? Glad you asked. He gave his second grade students a lesson on gardening tools (would I kid you?). Yep, the "hazardous tools" included screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches, which were kept in a toolbox on a shelf out of the reach of the kids. The children never touched the tools. So why was he suspended? Come on, you know, he exhibited negligence in supervising the kids and for "possessing, carrying, storing, or using a weapon". Why is this almost 2 year old story making news now? (I love all your questions) C'mon, Doug has recently filed a lawsuit against Chicago schools for humiliation and embarrassment as a result of his 4 day suspension. If I could sue for every time I've been embarrassed......
I WOULD HOPE THIS WOULD NEVER BE AN ISSUE for me, but the two brothers of Ariel Castro (the Cleveland Creep) say they knew nothing, saw nothing (you know...the full Sgt Schultz) about their brothers criminal actions. I believe them because how in the world could anybody allow the insanity to continue. I don't know about you, but brother or no brother, I'm singing like a bird if I know anything about something like this story. The Castro brothers (Onil and Pedro) gave an interview to CNN's Martin Savidge (former Cleveland TV reporter). I would think you could watch it at www.cnn.com.
HAVE A GREAT DAY AND JOIN ME tomorrow from 9am to noon on 640 WHLO. Jim
HERE'S A LITTLE HOMEWORK FOR YOU. WHAT TO DO about Detroit? A report out today indicates that the once proud city of Detroit, Michigan is a disaster (as if we didn't know that already). My question for our problem solving callers...What would you do to re-invent the Motor City. I really believe we need some "out of the box thinking" on this. While we've seen small towns become "ghost towns", I don't believe we've ever seen a major American city completely die (and Detroit is about as close to death as anything I've ever seen). Think about it and call me Tuesday morning on 640 WHLO.
CAN YOU BELIEVE O. J. SIMPSON IS BACK IN the news? He wants a new trial. Not for killing anyone, but because he took hostages in a Las Vegas motel room in an attemp to take items from a sports memorabila collector that he says belonged to him. It's a long story. Anyway, if O.J. doesn't get a new trial, he will probably spend the rest of his life in prison (I hear he's very popular there).
WE SPOKE BRIEFLY LAST WEEK ABOUT A DUTCH company (Mars One) that's looking for people who would like to fly (one way) to Mars starting in 2023. The company is expecting up to 500,000 entries. So far they have received 78,000 applications. I think I feel a question coming out of this story. How about...Who would you like to send to Mars with a one way ticket. Think about it and let me know in the morning.
AS I MENTIONED ON TODAY'S SHOW, THE HIGHTENED scrutiny of groups with conservative political views should have never happened. One Republican was quoted as saying this was "chilling". I couldn't agree more. Now we need to see what happens with this. Democrats as well as Republicans have been quoted as saying an investigation is due. Again, I couldn't agree more. A liberal group would be just as upset as conservative groups. This is where politics gets it's well deserved lousy reputation.
GO TRIBE! HOW ABOUT THOSE INDIANS!!! Two out of three against Detroit. Today it's a doubleheader against the Yankees. Don't wake me up, the Tribe has won 12 of their last 14 games against some good teams. Again, don't wake me up, I want to enjoy this as long as possible.
TALK TO YOU IN THE MORNING ON 640 WHLO. Jim
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY (TO ALL YOU MOTHERS OUT THERE)!
OLD DINO BROUGHT UP THE CLEVELAND INDIANS on today's show. I believe the direct quote was "How about those Indians"! Yea...how about those Indians. Being somewhat conservative about certain things (and also being a lifetime Cleveland sports fan), I'm excited about our local professional baseball team...BUT...Herb Score used to say "Your never as good as when your going well, and your never as bad as you look when your in the middle of a losing streak"...or something like that. I'm enjoying the heck out of their winning ways, but I know all good things must come to an end. I just hope the end comes sometime in late October. Go Tribe!
WE ARE IN FOR A COOL WEEKEND (especially Sunday), so forget the picnic and take Mom to Menches brothers for their Mothers Day Buffet. She'll love ya for it.
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY WEEKEND AND JOIN me Monday morning from 9am to noon on 640 WHLO. Jim
